    From the video of the Tesla crash into the truck you can see that the brakes were deployed briefly and perhaps the actions of the driver interfered with that deployment. It looks as if there are other factors that need to be investigated.

    Food for thought: 1) The truck was on it's side at an angle to the Tesla. Radar works by bouncing signals off objects and then it times the return signal to determine distance. If the signal does not return, then the RADAR is blind to an object. The reason the F117 Nighthawk stealth fighter has sharp angles is to bounce signals away from the RADAR receiver thus making it stealth. So in this case, just like looking at an image in a mirror, any RADAR bounce from the RADAR sender was probably scattered to the left and right of the Tesla due to the sharp angle of the roof and back door of the truck. 2) The top (and probably back) of the truck was probably all white, or some other mono-chromatic color. The cameras on the Tesla may have reacted as if it were driving into a white horizon. It probably saw it as nothing in it's way but a clear sky over a hill top.

    4:38 this is true, however you can detect objects with radar by analysing the returned signal since different objects have different signatures. This allows you to train a machine learning model to detect what object is being defected by the radar. For instance this technology is used in submarines

    This reminds me of the time a Tesla crashed into a crossing truck, because there was too little contrast difference between a white truck and the sky in the background. I suspect this might have been a similar case? Although that doesn't explain why Tesla wouldn't have built in a self-check, aka "if the road (lane markers etc.) is missing in the picture, assume the camera is faulty, listen to your other sensors and disable autopilot", which while yes, is complicated, that really should be done...

    Elon is right. LIDAR is a crutch. Obviously this wasn't the fault of optical sensors or you wouldn't see the truck on camera, because it wouldn't be detected by the camera; Obviously this isn't true. The thing that failed was the AI interpreting the information from the sensor rather then the type of sensor. The reason why LIDAR is a crutch is because you'll need optical sensors anyway to provide the AI with enough context to have some extent of situational awareness. And once an AI has situational awareness it doesn't need LIDAR anyway. LIDAR is a pitfall.

    The reason the Tesla’s RADAR system wasn’t able to discern the truck as a stationary object was because of the angle it was facing. RADAR requires a return signal and it’s the reason why stealth planes like the F-117, F-22 and the F-35’s are able to avoid radar is because they deflect the radar return away from the detectors that are supposed to pick up the signal return. The truck was at an odd angle so the radar just bounced off it as it wasn’t there. As for the camera system not picking it up, it was more than likely not trained to recognize that situation and kept on trucking. The fault comes down to the idiot driver that was in the car, just because you have auto-drive doesn’t mean the car is fully autonomous, we just aren’t there. There is a reason you are warned to always keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the motherfucking surroundings, auto-drive is an aid not a replacement for the moron sitting in said Tesla. So he can fuck himself and stop blaming Tesla for his fucking mistake, although Tesla needs to put more emphasis on stopping idiot drivers think that their cars can literally drive themselves. I drive a Honda Accord that has the lane keep assist system coupled with the Adaptive Cruise Control and I love them because they allow me to momentarily take my eyes off the road for a moment when I need to do something that requires my immediate attention and be certain that the car will stay in its’s lane and I won’t rear end the car ahead of me if it decides to slow down momentarily. These are tools that are meant to make the drivers life easier, but in no fucking way are they a replacement for an attentive driver looking at their surroundings and be ready for anything. The days of autonomous driving are at least a decade or more away, until then, keep your fucking hands on your wheel and your eyes on a goddamn swivel unless you want to end up like this fucking moron running into an overturned truck.

    The traditional autoindustry has had fully autonomous cars with complete autonomy for 30 years. LITERALLY 30 YEARS, you see, they work with the military industrial complex and the first driverless car, with brain of a goddamn stealth yet made its maiden voyage from Dover to Paris with out a single driver input, in 1986. They have class 6 fully autonomous cars in testing, have had for over 15 years now. THEYRE JUST NOT STUPID ENOUGH TO SELL IT, BECAUSE THEY DONT WANT TO KILL PEOPLE. Also, they're in the business of making _CARS_ for _DRIVERS_ not robots to replace ride-share and cab drivers.     Actually, you're wrong. Radar echo object differentiation and enumeration has been a fucking thing since the goddamn 1960's and with ECM package of the A-12 and later the SR-71. And it's literally a non-issue to fit necessary modern day far more sophisticated computing power and DSP magic into a car. The Merc S-class; LITERALLY DOES. Instead of wasting it's time with selling unsafe, unreliable in tough conditions, poorly built fashion items with gadgety nonsense that nobody wants like non-car-industrialist Musk there. No wonder Apple is making a car... They can sell anything badged with their shit to idiots in California. Here in the real world, we actually build cars that don't fucking crash into literal inanimate objects BUT ACTUALLY HIT THE E-BRAKE FASTER THAN PEOPLE!     Eventually autonomous cars won't be able to all rely on individually observing the environment and navigating through it solo. I can see a future where cars are interconnected and act as a swarm. Informing a local group of cars of impending danger ahead and even reacting to potential accidents as one to avoid a pileup. Every car on the road could be aware of one another and anticipating accidents rather than just reacting to them. All while operating at the limit of the cars capabilities in an emergency situation. Elon Musk will also likely be the biggest opponent of communication standardization between cars when the NHTSA comes knocking because it will erase a lot of Teslas moat they've built for themselves.

    One objection sir, Toyota uses both lidar and cameras, for example my dad's chr doesn't allow for adaptive cruise and self driving in low visibility conditions because the cameras can't see and therefore can't interpret the objects, so I guess a combination of radar, lidar and cameras would be ideal

    Obviously, the combination of sensor inputs was something the AI had never seen before. Right? WRONG! If the AI had never seen it before, _it would have slowed down._ The fact that the car did not slow down meant the AI was confident. NOTE: Did you notice the puff of smoke as the car passed what appeared to be the truck driver standing by the side of the road? The car did not slow down for an obvious pedestrian except for a brief momentary brakes lockup (puff of smoke). I'm leaning towards there was a malfunction in the car autonomous systems. *Here ae some other factors regarding the truck (although the pedestrian should really raise the questions.):* SHAPE OF TOP The truck was on it's side showing it's top to the car. If the top was smooth, it could have been mistaken for a bridge which has smooth sides and can cross the road at a similar angle. COLOR OF TOP The color of the top of the truck, its reflectivity, sun angle, etc. could have created something unique - in fact it would be possible for a combination of these make the truck top have the same color as the road which would really be confusing. ANGLE OF TOP It is possible that the angle of the top was such that it reflected the radar away from the transmitter. Early Corvettes were know to have extremely small radar cross-sections because of their angled radiator. Stealth tech is based around let's call it a critical angle - found by Russians in the 30's. If you look at all the angles on F-22 edges, you'll see this angle everywhere. ANGLE + RADAR = Bad if you're unlucky. RELATIVE VELOCITY OF TOP Stationary so could be mistaken for bridge. I wouldn't be surprised that vehicles begin to carry transponders to help autonomous vehicles. Even RFID in license plates.

    Lidar can definitely *not* detect if a person is wearing a helmet at any reasonable distance. Have you ever seen a proper visualisation of a Lidar measurement? It's essentially a 360° distance map, but the pixels (measurements) are very sparse, It's notoriously difficult to make sense of.

    I don't doubt that tesla has "blackboxes" built into their cars, not nefariously, but for troubleshooting and development. If the person had lied and the car was on manual mode, tesla would have openly broadcast the findings of that. Ergo, the car was in AI mode at the time leading up to the crash. If I was to wager a guess, I'd say the AI likely mistook the trailer as an overhead sign and fog. When it got close enough for other sensors (ultrasonics etc) to see that it was detecting a much more solid object, then it finally braked, but was (appropriately set to be) too conservative about the swerving through traffic.

To answer your question "who in their right mind buys a car without test driving it?": crazy Tesla owners I'm glad I test drove the Tesla model 3 because I thought it sucked (large turning radius, overly aggressive regenerative braking felt like I slammed on the brakes, stiff ride due to high psi tires, road noise, ugly center stack screen with tiny fonts).

I have a Casio Cassiopeia E-125 from year 2000, it came out a year before the first ipod, it has a huge backlit color touchscreen, solid state storage with the compact flash card slot, has a jog dial that can shift through music as fast as Apple's sh*tty wheel. Meanwhile the first ipod didn't come out until 2001, had a crappy tiny black and white screen that looks like a gameboy from the 80s, had all kind of harddrive issues because it had a mechanical harddrive, it was a piece of garbage like Apple products still are today. I've even say the Zune is better than the ipod, even thou the Cassiopeia is the best of the three.

    Pulse Doppler Radar. VERY simplified: Stationary objects create no doppler for the pulse from the radar to measure, so it's invisible. This is a very well known effect and used by jets to avoid being locked on to by enemies

    It also just really unlikely this Tesla was in autopilot at all. It didn't even flinch with a person standing directly in the lane until AFTER it had passed that person, and the AI is absolutely trained to compensate for a human standing in the path of travel. The driver was just lying to get out of liability.
